Standing in front of St. Andreas, you might be surprised to learn that this grand Baroque church was originally built not as a place of worship for the local community, but rather for the Jesuits. The religious order, which arrived in Dusseldorf in 1619, built this church as their own, calling it their “court church”. This impressive building was constructed between 1622 and 1629, showcasing the beauty and craftsmanship of the South German baroque style. However, the Jesuits’ reign over the church was short-lived. In 1773, the order was dissolved, and St. Andreas was then used as a parish church for residents of Dusseldorf. It wasn’t until 2005 that the Dominicans, a different religious order, took over the church as their monastery, and it continues to be an active place of worship and a symbol of Dusseldorf’s rich religious heritage.
