Architectural Record House featured it in 1964. Lomax, however, didn’t receive proper credit. He left the firm soon after. The Rosens sold the house in 1970. Iris and Alan Mink bought it. The Iris Mink Trust now holds the property.
Craig Ellwood, born Jon Nelson Burke, was quite a character. He moved to California as a child. After serving in World War II, he started a construction company in 1946. He took the name “Craig Ellwood” from a liquor store. It was called Lords and Ellwood. Ellwood also worked as head of publicity for the Hollywood Bowl. His construction company failed in 1948. He then became a cost estimator for Lamport Cofer & Salzman. Jack Cofer asked Ellwood to design the Lappin House in 1948. The Lappin House was a success. Ellwood kept his new name. He started his own firm in 1949. He wasn’t a licensed architect. But he was a confident visionary.
