The towering white stupa greets you. It stands as a silent sentinel a testament to centuries past. This is Miaoying Temple also known as the White Stupa Temple. Its all-white pagoda is a beacon of serenity amidst Beijing’s bustling streets.

Miaoying Temple boasts immense historical significance. Its centerpiece the White Stupa is a marvel of Lamaist architecture. Construction began in 1271 during the Yuan Dynasty. Emperor Kublai Khan personally chose the location. The renowned Nepali architect Arniko along with Yuan Dynasty master Yi Lian Zhen oversaw its creation.

The White Stupa’s completion in 1279 marked a symbolic fusion of Tibetan Han and Mongol cultures. This majestic structure stands 50.9 meters tall. It’s the earliest and largest Lamaist stupa in China. It’s built of brick and stone. Its design blends Indian Tibetan and Nepali architectural styles. The stupa follows the ancient Indian Su Zhubo style. It features a unique Nepali craftsmanship.

Notice the stupa’s three main sections. There is the base the tower body and the finial. The base resembles a T-shaped platform with three tiers. Each tier has four inward-folding corners. This creates distinct angular stones and flat surfaces. The middle section the Mount Meru seat is framed by pillars and beams.

The gourd-shaped tower body has a long conical neck. This neck is divided into thirteen sections representing the Thirteen Heavens. Atop the stupa sits a bronze plate adorned with thirty-six small bronze bells.

The White Stupa’s design is not merely architectural. It also holds deep cultural and religious significance. It’s a key symbol of Yuan Dynasty Buddhism. It continues to fascinate scholars studying that era’s artistic and religious practices. In 2002 a bronze statue of Arniko was placed at the temple to honor his contributions.

The temple grounds cover 13000 square meters. They’re divided into two main sections: the main courtyard and the stupa courtyard. The central axis features several buildings including a Mountain Gate Bell and Drum Towers a Heavenly King Hall and the Mahavira Hall. The Mahavira Hall now houses historical artifacts and artwork. It was originally built to house the Three Buddhas. The Seven Buddha Hall displays seven gilded copper Buddha statues and a Thousand-Hand Guanyin Bodhisattva.

The Stupa Courtyard is the most sacred area. Here the White Stupa stands majestically. It’s a testament to the devotion and spiritual practice of Yuan Dynasty Buddhism.

Miaoying Temple is a place of tranquility and reflection. In the spring vibrant blossoms create a stunning backdrop for the White Stupa. It’s a must-see for anyone seeking a peaceful escape in Beijing. Remember the rich history and cultural significance of Miaoying Temple and its remarkable White Stupa. Let its serene atmosphere linger in your memory.
