Did César Manrique ever imagine his vision would become such a beloved spot? Here at Mirador César Manrique, his artistry has truly taken flight. Originally known as Mirador del Palmarejo, this viewpoint in Valle Gran Rey is a testament to his unique style. Inaugurated in 1995, after starting the project back in 1989, Mirador César Manrique offers one of the most breathtaking panoramas of La Gomera. From here, you can take in the impressive “cañón” of Valle Gran Rey, a spectacular example of the island’s rural landscape. Terraced fields cascade down the slopes, farmhouses climb the hillsides, and palm groves dot the scene all the way down to the sea. Today, the mirador also houses a popular restaurant. It’s the perfect place to sample traditional Canarian dishes while enjoying the view. And speaking of views, Mirador César Manrique is renowned for its incredible stargazing opportunities. In February and March, after sunset, the constellation of Orion dominates the winter sky. Its distinctive “coffee pot” shape is easily recognizable, with the reddish Betelgeuse on Orion’s shoulder and the blue Rigel at his foot. Look closely, and you’ll spot the three stars of Orion’s Belt. Just below, three smaller stars mark the location of the Great Orion Nebula, a stellar nursery relatively close to Earth.
