Glasgow needed a Baptist church. The story of Springburn Baptist Church begins with a young girl’s innocent question. Richard Garnett’s daughter asked why there wasn’t a Baptist church in Glasgow. Her simple inquiry sparked a vision.
Now, standing before Springburn Baptist Church, imagine that initial spark. Services first took place in the Garnett’s home. This was before a dedicated church building existed. The first recorded church meeting occurred in February 1818. Reverend William Warder was chosen as Moderator. William Logan became the clerk. Early members included Elizabeth Gorin, Sally Bush, and others. These individuals were received through letters of transfer. Richard Garnett was appointed as a deacon. William Logan joined him in this role.
By April 1822, Rev. Peter Bainbridge was elected pastor. A significant step followed. W. T. Bush, Henry Crutcher, Richard Garnett, and William Shirley were tasked with a crucial mission. They were to solicit subscriptions. They were also to build a house of public worship. This would happen as soon as enough funds were gathered.
Bainbridge’s pastorship continued until October 2, 1825. Rev. Jacob Lock then stepped in temporarily. He filled the pulpit until a permanent replacement could be found. Richard Garnett, William Logan, and George W. Trabue assessed him. They listened to his first sermon in May 1826. J. W. Davis became moderator in January 1829. Thomas Scrivener followed in July 1831. Rev. Jacob Lock was eventually appointed pastor in September 1832.
The church was officially constituted in May 1834. The church covenant and constitution were adopted. Signatories included William Warder, M. W. Hall, and W. Logan. Also signing were Sally Logan, G. W. Trabue, and Jesse Grinstead. The presbyters were Rev. Jacob Lock, Ralph Petty, and others.
Springburn Baptist Church took its place in Glasgow’s history. Early members came from Mount Tabor Baptist Church. This was the oldest Baptist Church in Barren County. The initial membership included respected citizens. Rev. Jacob Locke was affectionately known as “Father Locke”. William Logan served as county clerk for many years. Richard Garnett worked in the Circuit and County Clerk’s offices. Ralph Petty and Cornelius Deweese pastored various Baptist churches. Elizabeth Gorin was the wife of John Gorin. John Gorin was the man upon whose land the town of Glasgow was built.
Today, Springburn Baptist Church stands as a testament to that vision. The current building was completed in 1980. It was designed by R. B. Rankin and Associates. It stands at 14 Huntershill Street off Springburn Road. The church continues to be a Christ-centered community. It is dedicated to sharing God’s love. It makes disciples through worship, prayer, and outreach.
