Built in 1959 the Katholisch-Apostolische Gemeinde in Dusseldorf stands before you. Its construction marked a significant moment. It symbolized the independence of a community. This community originated from a split within the New Apostolic Church. The building’s story is one of resilience and growth.

The Katholisch-Apostolische Gemeinde’s origins lie in a 1955 schism. Apostle Peter Kuhlen and his colleagues were expelled. They established the Apostolic Community in Dusseldorf. This new community began with little. They lacked a building funds and materials. Early services were held in school auditoriums. Imagine the scene makeshift altars borrowed chairs.

The search for a permanent home began. A plot on Klosterstrasse was considered. However its size proved unsuitable. A site on Heinestrasse now Cantadorstrasse offered more promise. The purchase of this land cost 120000 DM. The construction was overseen by Apostle Kuhlen. He collaborated with architect Franz Kupp. Kupp was known to the community though not formally affiliated with either the New Apostolic or the Apostolic Church.

The construction was a complex undertaking. The building’s design had to be adjusted. This was necessary to accommodate the limited space. The building cost approximately 397000 DM. This included the organ built by Eberhard Friedrich Walcker of Ludwigsburg. The organ boasts 15 registers. The cost of the organ initially estimated at 28400 DM increased to 30830 DM.

The Katholisch-Apostolische Gemeinde’s building was consecrated on January 23 1960. This was exactly five years after the separation from the New Apostolic Church. All but one of the fifteen founding members attended the ceremony. The building has seen numerous renovations over the years. These renovations reflect the community’s enduring commitment to its faith and its place in Dusseldorf. The Katholisch-Apostolische Gemeinde stands as a testament to perseverance. It is a symbol of faith and community in Dusseldorf.
