Here at Senri Tenjin, also known as Kamishinden Tenjin Shrine, the fragrance of red and white plum blossoms fills the air, especially in spring. Senri Tenjin stands as the guardian deity of Senri. The shrine is nestled in Senri Chuo, a bustling sub-center of Osaka. Yet, it’s surrounded by lush trees, offering a tranquil escape. Senri Tenjin enshrines Tenjin-sama (Michizane Sugawara), the god of academics. The co-shrine honors Inari-okami, the god of business prosperity. This makes it a popular destination for students and business people alike. The shrine’s history is intertwined with the development of the Senri Hills area. During the mid-Edo period, the shogunate directly controlled the central part of Senri Hills. This led to the development of villages and the establishment of Senri Tenjin as the area’s guardian deity. The main hall is a beautiful example of one-ken Nagare-zukuri style architecture. Rebuilt in 1686, its vivid colors and karahafu roof, made entirely of persimmon wood, earned it recognition as an Important Tangible Cultural Property of Osaka City. Senri Tenjin is more than just a historical site. It is a vibrant cultural hub. Throughout the year, the shrine hosts various events. These include votive musical performances, traditional entertainment, and even video streaming on their dedicated YouTube channel, Senri Tenjin Channel. From January 1st to 3rd, the New Year’s Festival draws worshippers from across northern Osaka. The shrine grounds are open 24 hours a day. The shrine itself is open for blessings and prayers from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with extended hours on special occasions. So, come and experience the tranquility and vibrant culture of Senri Tenjin.
