From its humble beginnings as a small Bible study group. The House of Prayer in Durban stands as a testament to faith and growth. This isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in the very bricks and mortar.

The House of Prayer’s journey began in the early 1980s. It started as a weekly gathering of university students. These students were from the Frere Road Presbyterian Church. Initially they rented space once a month. Eventually they purchased the Methodist Church on Fremantle Road in Hillary. In July 1983 a church was born. It was called Fremantle Road Christian Fellowship.

This humble church served as their home until 2001. That year the House of Prayer purchased land on Ethelbert Road in Queensburgh. They built the current church building there. This new location marked a significant step in the church’s expansion and growth. It reflects their increasing congregation.

The name House of Prayer is deeply meaningful. It’s taken from Isaiah 56:7 and quoted by Jesus in the Gospels. “My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations”. This perfectly encapsulates their vision. It’s a place of worship open to people from all backgrounds and walks of life. It represents their commitment to global outreach.

Today the House of Prayer continues to thrive. It serves as a spiritual anchor for its community. The church hosts three Sunday services in Queensburgh. There are also services at Eagles Rest Mission in Shongweni. Beyond Sunday services the House of Prayer actively fosters community. They do this through weekly Connect Groups in members’ homes. These groups provide deeper fellowship and community building. They aim for three Connect Groups per month. The third week is set aside for ministries.

This is more than a building. It’s a living embodiment of faith. It’s a place where stories are shared and lives are transformed. The House of Prayer in Durban stands as a powerful symbol of hope and spiritual growth. It’s a beacon of faith in the heart of Durban. A place where people come together to worship and connect with God. This is a place of immense spiritual significance.
