What if I told you the name of Camphin-en-Carembault holds secrets from long ago? This French commune resides in the Nord department. It is found in the Hauts-de-France region. Camphin-en-Carembault is a place where history whispers through the fields.

Camphin-en-Carembault’s name has intriguing origins. Some say it comes from the Latin word “Confinium”. This means border or limit. This makes sense as Camphin-en-Carembault sits on the edge of Artois. Others suggest a Germanic origin. “Kamph” means combat and “en” means against or near.

Let’s journey back. In 855-869, it was known as Camphin in Pago Carabatisse. A diploma from King Lothair mentions it. By 966, it appeared as Camvin in a document from Saint Pierre of Gand. In 1120, the Cartulaire de l’abbaye de Marchiennes called it Camphinium. 1140 saw it named Canfing in a title from Saint Martin of Tournai.

In 1284, it was Camfin. This appeared in a judicial inquiry by the Count of Flanders. A 1564 map in the Mitterand Museum of Jarnac shows “Campyn”. This hints at “in the middle of the fields.” The village lies in the ancient Carembault region. This region straddled Artois and Flanders.

Camphin-en-Carembault has seen its share of turmoil. In 1478, soldiers from Bourgogne burned the village. The church was completely destroyed then. 1692 brought an earthquake to Camphin-en-Carembault.

Between 1708 and 1712, war ravaged Camphin-en-Carembault. English soldiers inflicted terrible damage in 1709. Yet, peace came in 1712 with Prince Eugene of Savoy’s victory at Denain. Delegates from France and the Emperor met here. They defined new borders between France and the Belgian Netherlands after the Treaty of Utrecht.

During 1939-1945, Camphin-en-Carembault suffered again. English forces evacuated the village. Houses were looted. Combat left its mark. A house on the square was destroyed. The church was damaged. A shell landed in the schoolyard. June 6, 1944, brought more fear. The Gestapo surrounded Camphin-en-Carembault. Men were taken to the town hall, fearing a massacre. The Gestapo was called away because of the landings.

Camphin-en-Carembault bears the scars and stories of centuries. Its three silver keys on a red background represent the arms of the abbey of Saint-Pierre. These keys link it to its past. They can be found in the town’s official logo. The abbey was located at Mont-Blandin in Ghent.

Today, Camphin-en-Carembault stands as a testament to resilience. It is a reminder that even small villages hold significant tales. These tales are of borders, battles, and the enduring spirit of its people.
