“A small city,” they call it. Here stands the Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaften building. It is located on the Westend campus of Goethe University Frankfurt.

The Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaften building is the northernmost part of the Westend campus. The campus is known for the historic Poelzig-Bau. This older building from 1931 features industrial rationalism in its design.

The Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaften is made of three cubic structures. These structures show their different purposes on the outside. Courtyards connect them. This design creates a “small city” feel. It makes the building seem like its own friendly-sized world.

BLK2 Boge Lindner K2 Architekten designed the Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaften building. Lutz-Matthias Keßling led the overall project. Vincent Jeanson and Iko Mennenga managed the planning. Many others were involved in architecture and open space design.

Other firms also helped create the Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaften building. Mathes Beratende Ingenieure GmbH handled structural engineering. Alhäuser + König Ingenieurbüro GmbH managed building technology. Prof. Michael Lange’s firm oversaw facade planning. Müller-BBM Holding AG handled building physics and acoustics. IBC Ingenieurbau-Consult GmbH planned fire protection. GEISEL GmbH designed the kitchens.

The State Agency for Construction and Real Estate Hessen LBIH was the client. The Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaften building was completed in September 2022.

The Faculty of Linguistics and Cultural Studies is large. It has over 40 professorships. There are 11 institutes. These contain 17 departments or subjects. The faculty has developed a strong identity over 15 years.
