“Is that Fortification Hill?” a child’s voice broke the quiet at Boulder Harbor. Boulder Harbor, nestled on the edge of Lake Mead, has witnessed a lot of history. Boulder Harbor isn’t just a spot for launching boats. It’s a testament to the fluctuating fortunes of Lake Mead. Once a bustling marina, Boulder Harbor fell victim to the receding waters. In 2021, access for vehicles had to be restricted. The changing water levels transformed it. The remaining portion of the boat ramp is now the Boulder Harbor Walking Trail. This transformation speaks volumes about the impact of drought on this once-vibrant harbor. While the marina moved to Hemenway Harbor in 2008, the closure of Boulder Harbor to vehicles marked another chapter in Lake Mead’s story. Imagine standing here in the 1930s when Boulder Harbor was brand new. The lake was full. The air was filled with the sounds of motorboats and laughter. Families came to Boulder Harbor to escape the desert heat and enjoy the cool water. Today, the scene is quieter. The exposed lakebed serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing water challenges. Yet, Boulder Harbor still draws visitors. They come to walk the trail, reflect on the past, and appreciate the enduring beauty of the surrounding landscape. The extinct volcano, Fortification Hill, still provides a dramatic backdrop. Boulder Harbor remains a significant landmark in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. A place where history and nature intertwine, offering a unique perspective on the ever-changing landscape of the American West.
