St. Petka’s Serbian Orthodox Church

Fifty years ago, a dream began to take root amongst the Serbian Orthodox families of North San Diego County. They envisioned a spiritual home, a place where they could celebrate their faith and heritage. That dream materialized into St. Petka’s Serbian Orthodox Church. St. Petka’s Church wasn’t always here, at 1854 Knob Hill Road in San Marcos. Its story began in 1973, initially as a monastery dedicated to Holy Martyr Avakum. The Serbian community, already active since 1961, longed for a permanent center. Businessmen Sinisa Cenic, Bosko Kresovic, and Caslav Mitic spearheaded the effort, holding a pivotal meeting at the Mitic home. There, they elected Bosko Kresovic as president and Savo Vujnovic as secretary of what would become the church’s founding committee. A turning point came when Milan Andjelkovic generously offered his own land for the project, with one condition. He requested the church be dedicated to his family’s patron saint, St. Petka. This act of generosity sealed the location and future name of St. Petka’s Serbian Orthodox Church. The land, officially acquired on September 27, 1973, became more than just a monastery. The growing community realized the need for a dedicated parish. In 1986, with the blessing of Bishop Irinej, the monastery transitioned into St. Petka’s Serbian Orthodox Church. The foundation was consecrated in May 1986, a moment of great joy for the community. The present church building, consecrated in 1991, stands as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of the Serbian Orthodox faithful. Beyond its beautiful exterior, St. Petka’s serves as a vibrant hub. It hosts a parish home, a social hall, a reception hall, a library, a classroom, a soccer field, and a playground. It’s a place where faith is nurtured, traditions are celebrated, and community thrives. The church continues to observe its annual Slava, a testament to the enduring legacy of St. Petka and the unwavering spirit of the Serbian Orthodox community. The celebration in 2023 marked the 50th anniversary of the parish, a milestone achieved through faith, generosity, and a shared dream.
