Clayfield Uniting Church stands proudly at 170 Bonney Avenue. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a cornerstone of the Clayfield community a hub of activity and a beacon of hope for over a century. Its roots however stretch far back.
Originally the Wooloowin Methodist Church Clayfield Uniting Church has a rich and fascinating past. Founded in 1902 it served generations of worshippers. The building you see today however is relatively recent. A foundation stone was laid on March 2 1986 by Reverend Leslie T Vickery. The church was dedicated on April 5 1987 by Reverend Barry Dangerfield. The centenary of the Wooloowin Methodist Church was celebrated on April 14 2002.
But the story doesn’t begin in 1902. Long before this current structure stood another church stood on this very spot. This is where the Eagle Junction United Free Methodist Church once thrived. That congregation worshipped in a weatherboard building from 1865. The building was eventually moved to make way for the railway station. This historical building then served as a Sunday school.
In 1977 a significant change occurred. The Eagle Junction Congregational Church and the Wooloowin Methodist Church merged. This union formed the Clayfield Uniting Church we see today. The 170 Bonney Avenue location became its permanent home. The former Eagle Junction church buildings at 221 Bonney Avenue and 5 Norman Parade were sold.
This merging wasn’t simply an administrative decision. It was a coming together of two distinct histories two unique traditions. It reflected a broader movement within Australian Christianity. The birth of the Uniting Church of Australia symbolized a spirit of unity and cooperation.
Today Clayfield Uniting Church continues to serve its community. It offers a warm welcome to all visitors. Its history is a living story etched into its very walls.
