Gazing up at the Three Kings Monument, a sense of awe washes over you. The sheer size and intricate detail of the bronze statues is impressive. The Three Kings Monument, right here in the heart of Chiang Mai, is more than just a statue. It’s a symbol of the city’s rich history and a tribute to the three kings who founded it over 700 years ago. The monument depicts King Mengrai, the founder of Chiang Mai, alongside King Ramkamhaeng of Sukhothai and King Ngam Muang of Phayao. These three monarchs, instrumental in establishing the Lanna Kingdom, forged a pact of friendship. Legend says they mixed their blood with sacred water and drank it together, solidifying their alliance. This alliance was key to the founding of Chiang Mai in 1296. The Three Kings Monument stands proudly in front of the old Provincial Hall, now the City Art and Culture Center. The square in front of the monument is a bustling hub, hosting many festivals throughout the year. The most spectacular is the Loy Krathong Festival in November. During this festival, the square transforms into a magical spectacle of lanterns and decorative animals. The locals revere the Three Kings Monument as a shrine. They offer flowers, incense, and candles to the statues. They seek the blessings of these visionary kings who conceived the idea of Chiang Mai. The monument, cast in bronze and dark copper, was created in 1984 by the artist Kaimook Chuto. It’s a powerful reminder of the city’s origins. The Three Kings Monument invites you to delve deeper into Chiang Mai’s past.
