Whispers of ancient power surround you. This is the Qitian Dasheng Temple a place where legends intertwine with faith. Here in Guangzhou the temple stands as a testament to the enduring devotion to the Monkey God Sun Wukong. For generations people have sought his blessings for protection prosperity and business success.

The Qitian Dasheng Temple is more than just a building. It’s a spiritual sanctuary. It’s a living history. It’s a place where the Monkey God’s legacy endures. The temple is renowned for its many statues of Sun Wukong. More than ten statues reside within its walls each capturing a different facet of his personality. Each statue draws followers seeking his guidance and protection.

Stories abound about the Qitian Dasheng Temple. Stories of miraculous healings. Stories of unwavering faith. Stories passed down through generations. The temple has a unique history. In the past parents brought their children to the temple for a special treatment. This treatment was for a condition called Gao Sng. Gao Sng caused children to stop growing and exhibit monkey-like behaviors. Doctors at the time couldn’t understand the cause.

Mediums guided by the Monkey God used talismans divination blocks and unconventional remedies. The severity of the condition was assessed by the number of nodes under the child’s armpits. Milder cases were treated with a talisman and divination blocks. Severe cases needed the Monkey God’s direct guidance. A crucial aspect of the treatment involved bringing the child every 3rd 6th and 9th day of the lunar month. The treatment could last up to 49 days. During this time the child had to stay indoors avoiding bright lights and certain events. Unique remedies such as chicken excrement were used to dispel the monkey spirit. Children successfully treated became godchildren of the Monkey God. This symbolized the profound faith in the temple’s healing powers.

The temple’s legacy continued even after the passing of its founding medium Goh Kim Choon. Goh passed away on the 18th of the 8th lunar month in 1961. The night before he passed away his reddened face during celebrations led others to believe he hadn’t received approval to extend his life. His funeral wake drew around 1000 attendees. This included many god-sons he had cured of Gao Sng. After a 100-day mourning period Goh’s son Goh Geok Swan sought the Monkey God’s guidance. He received guidance to continue the temple’s legacy. Supported by his mother and devoted followers the spiritual sanctuary persevered.

The Qitian Dasheng Temple stands as a powerful symbol. It is a symbol of faith healing and community service. It is a testament to the enduring strength of the human spirit. It’s a place of wonder a beacon of hope and a reminder of the enduring power of belief. The Qitian Dasheng Temple in Guangzhou is a place to experience and remember.
