Asya Geisberg Gallery started in Chelsea in 2010. Asya Geisberg wanted a space for intellectual inquiry. She envisioned a place where art and ideas could cross-pollinate. After more than ten years, the gallery moved. It found a new home at 45 White Street in Tribeca. Now it is part of Tribeca’s vibrant arts community.
The new gallery space is impressive. It has two floors and 1350 square feet. The space features beautiful wood floors. Fifteen-foot ceilings add to the grandeur. The new space allows for larger exhibitions. A private viewing room is located downstairs. William Olmsted Antozzi Office of Architecture designed the gallery. Antozzi previously worked with Renzo Piano and Diller Scofidio + Renfro.
Asya Geisberg said she was lucky to find her first space. It was already built out in Chelsea. She is happy to be in Tribeca now. She remembers Tribeca from the old Pearl Paint days. There is an intimacy of walking down the block among many galleries. It reminds her of Chelsea’s shared sense of purpose. She is thrilled to join Tribeca’s burgeoning community.
Since 2010, Asya Geisberg Gallery has worked with conceptually driven artists. These artists pose sociopolitical questions. They also reinvigorate their chosen mediums. The gallery honors emerging artists. Many are women. It also represents international artists without US representation.
Gallery artists work in various media. These include ceramics and embroidery. They also work in painting, photography, and sculpture. They show curiosity in world history. Archaeology and cultural politics also play a role. They often present a non-US perspective.
Asya Geisberg Gallery has launched the careers of many artists. Rebecca Morgan and Julie Schenkelberg are among them. Gudmundur Thoroddsen is another success story. Recently, the gallery added new artists to its roster. Katarina Riesing and Rodrigo Valenzuela joined. Kristen Sanders and Gabriela Vainsencher also became part of the gallery.
The gallery has showcased many interesting shows. “Banshees” featured several artists. Kat Chamberlin and Roxanne Jackson were included. Rose Nestler and Heidi Norton also participated. Esther Ruiz and Carolyn Salas added their talents. Trish Tillman and Letha Wilson rounded out the group. Shane Walsh presented “Shadow Arcade.” Gudmundur Thoroddsen displayed “Up and Down.” “Cover Band” was a group exhibition. Asya Geisberg Gallery is a member of NADA. It is also a member of ArtTable. The gallery has participated in art fairs. These include The Armory Show and NADA NY. It has also shown at UNTITLED Miami and ExpoChicago.
