That’s Greyville, home to Durban’s oldest and most famous horse racing track. The Greyville Racecourse is a place where the roar of the crowd mingles with the thunder of hooves, where generations of families gather to watch the horses race. It’s a place where people come together, where dreams are made and broken. Greyville, a place where you can feel the history in the very air itself. It’s a place where the past and present collide, where the echoes of history still linger. It’s a place that once bloomed into a vibrant cosmopolitan hub. It was a melting pot of cultures, with shopkeepers of all nationalities. By the 1930s, sections of Greyville were home to a large Indian community. But sadly, as time passed, Greyville’s fate was changed by the South African Apartheid laws. The Group Areas Act declared Greyville off-limits to Indians and parts were demolished in the 1970s. Today, Greyville stands as a reminder of a different time, a time of great diversity and hope. The vibrant spirit of Greyville may have been lost, but the legacy of its multicultural heritage is alive in Durban’s heart.
