Closing its doors after 89 years, the Charles R Edwards Middle School stands as a silent testament to changing times. This very building, once bustling with the energy of middle schoolers, now echoes with the memories of generations past. The Charles R Edwards Middle School wasn’t always destined for closure. It served grades 6-8, drawing students primarily from East Boston and a few from Charlestown. The school, situated on Main and Walker Streets, became a focal point for families outside the immediate neighborhood. In 2019, a decision was made to phase out stand-alone middle schools. The Charles R Edwards Middle School was included in this plan. The phasing out began with no new sixth-grade class admitted. This final graduating class of 2021 knew their school’s fate since they were in sixth grade. Yet, they chose to remain, to finish their middle school journey within these walls. Their perseverance is a testament to the community they found here. The Boston School Committee officially voted to close the Charles R Edwards Middle School in December 2020. The decision was met with mixed emotions. While some mourned the loss of a beloved institution, others saw an opportunity. The need for more elementary school seats in Charlestown had been growing. The possibility of repurposing the Charles R Edwards Middle School building for elementary education arose. This building could breathe new life into the neighborhood’s educational landscape, supporting the existing elementary schools. The future use of the Charles R Edwards Middle School remains a topic of community discussion. The hope is to repurpose the building for educational use, ensuring that it continues to serve the community. The final graduation ceremony, held in Eden Street Park in June 2021, was a poignant moment. Acting Mayor Kim Janey shared her personal connection to the school, having attended during the turbulent busing era of the 1970s. Her presence underscored the significance of the Charles R Edwards Middle School in Boston’s history. The final class, 121 students strong, marked the end of an era. Their graduation was a bittersweet celebration, acknowledging the school’s rich history while looking towards the future.
