Has anyone ever noticed how the Beetham Tower seems to pierce the Manchester sky? It’s like a giant, gleaming shard of glass, isn’t it? The Beetham Tower, also known as the Hilton Tower, has quite a story to tell. Completed in 2006, this 47-story skyscraper was the brainchild of the Beetham Organisation and the architectural vision of SimpsonHaugh and Partners. It occupies a rather slim plot of land at the top of Deansgate, which explains its slender, almost needle-like profile. Originally envisioned to be 50 stories, wind tests forced a slight reduction, a decision that would later contribute to its, shall we say, unique acoustic signature. The Beetham Tower was a symbol of Manchester’s post-industrial rebirth, a bold statement in glass and steel. For a while, it reigned supreme as the tallest building in Manchester, and even the tallest outside London, until Deansgate Square took the title in 2018. The design of the Beetham Tower is striking, to say the least. The elongated floor plan gives it an incredible height-to-width ratio of 10:1 on the east-west facade. A dramatic four-meter cantilever juts out on the north side, marking the division between the hotel and the residential areas. And then there’s the “blade,” a glass structure at the top that serves as both a lightning rod and a visual exclamation point, emphasizing the tower’s slender form. This blade, however, is also the source of a rather peculiar phenomenon. In windy conditions, the Beetham Tower emits a low, humming sound, almost a howl, described by some as a B below middle C. It’s been heard across large parts of Manchester, a constant, if unintentional, serenade. The sound, attributed to the blade’s interaction with the wind, has been the subject of numerous attempts at mitigation, but it persists, a quirky element of the tower’s personality. Inside, the Beetham Tower houses a four-star Hilton Hotel, taking up the lower 22 floors. On the 23rd floor, Cloud 23 offers breathtaking views of the city and beyond. Above, residential apartments fill the remaining floors, culminating in a luxurious penthouse occupying the top two stories, complete with a semi-indoor garden featuring olive, lemon, and oak trees. The Beetham Tower is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of Manchester’s ambition and its evolving identity, a landmark that stands tall, hums its own tune, and offers unparalleled views of a city constantly reinventing itself.
