From the ashes of Bengal’s partition, Jadavpur University emerged. A beacon of knowledge and resistance. It’s 1905. The British Empire, in its arrogance, decided to divide Bengal. This ignited a firestorm of protest. A boycott of British goods and institutions, including Calcutta University. From this turmoil, a seed of an idea was planted. A national university, free from colonial influence. Jadavpur University traces its roots to this fervent period. Born from the National Council of Education (NCE) in Bengal, founded in 1906. Luminaries like Rabindranath Tagore and Aurobindo Ghosh championed this vision. They envisioned an institution dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge, fueled by national pride. The Bengal Technical Institute, established in 1910, became the cornerstone of this dream. Later evolving into the College of Engineering and Technology, Bengal. In 1921, a substantial bequest from Sir Rash Behari Ghosh allowed the NCE to acquire land in Jadavpur. This land, leased by Calcutta Corporation, became the university’s home. The Aurobindo Bhavan, now an administrative hub, once echoed with the voices of these early scholars. Jadavpur University officially came into being on December 24, 1955. It blossomed into a full-fledged university. Offering programs in engineering, science, and arts. Jadavpur University wasn’t just a place of learning. It was a symbol of defiance. A testament to the power of education and national unity. Even amidst turmoil, like the Naxalite movement of the late 1960s, Jadavpur University persevered. Jadavpur University stands today as a testament to its rich history. A vibrant hub of education and research, a living embodiment of the dreams of its founders. As you stand before its gates, remember the spirit that birthed this institution. The spirit of resistance, the pursuit of knowledge, and the unwavering belief in a brighter future.
