Perhaps, standing here, you’re pondering the significance of this modern building. This is the Consulate General of the United States in Hamburg. It represents American interests in Northern Germany.
Let’s step back in time. The first American mission in Hamburg began in 1790. John Parish was the first Vice Consul. In 1793, he became a full Consul. George Washington himself vouched for Parish. He asked Hamburg’s leaders to assist him.
The Consulate General of the United States has a rich history. It faced closures during both World Wars. It reopened in Hamburg on March 1, 1946. For many years, it was located at Alsterufer. The U.S. government bought that building in 1950. That building once served as the Nazi Party headquarters in Hamburg.
The former consulate became known as “das Weiße Haus an der Alster”. That translates to “the White House on the Alster”. Security was often increased after 9/11. There was even a direct threat against the consulate.
In 2009, a local newspaper made an April Fool’s joke. It said the consulate would move to a World War II shelter. In the late 1990s, some of the property was sold. The money went to the U.S. Embassy in Berlin. The consulate was famous for its large Christmas tree. It was placed on the balcony each year.
The artificial lake Außenalster was in front of the old American consulate. The Dammtor railway station was nearby.
In 2024, the U.S. government sold the Alsterufer building. It will become a hotel. The Consulate General of the United States moved in July 2022. It is now located in the Hanseatic Trade Center. The address is Kehrwieder 8.
Many people have served as Consul General here. Karen E. Johnson took over from Duane C. Butcher in 2007. Darion Akins was Consul General from 2019 to 2022. Jason Chue became Consul General in July 2022.
