Did you know that Fischtalpark in Berlin wasn’t always a park? This beautiful green space nestled between Argentinische Allee and Onkel-Tom-Strasse has a fascinating history. It began its life 115 000 years ago during the Weichsel Ice Age. A massive glacier carved out this valley a glacial trough. This valley was once called Viechtal meaning cattle valley. Farmers used it as pastureland for their animals. The name slowly changed to Fischtal meaning fish valley. However there was never any fishing in the shallow pond. The pond served as a watering hole for livestock.

Fischtalpark’s transformation into the park we see today began around 1920. World War I delayed earlier plans. Zehlendorf’s garden director Emil Schubert had a vision. He wanted to enhance the natural beauty. His plan was to highlight the existing landscape with paths and plants. The planting of trees became a vital job creation program during a time of great need in Berlin. Max Dietrich took over the project in 1925. His work brought Schubert’s vision to fruition.

The Fischtalpark is a long green strip separated by Riemeisterstrasse. It boasts expansive lawns surrounded by conifers. Playgrounds are situated at both ends of the park. The central Fischtalteich a small pond is a focal point. It is surrounded by trees and water lilies. A popular sledding hill is near Onkel-Tom-Strasse. A wooden hut near Sophie-Charlotte-Strasse serves as a youth meeting place. Sadly this hut has also been used for noisy late-night parties disturbing nearby residents.

For many years Fischtalfeste lively festivals took place in Fischtalpark. Decorated horse-drawn carriages paraded through the streets. These festivities ended in 2012. The last festival was organized by the Steglitz-Zehlendorf youth and children’s office.

Today Fischtalpark offers a tranquil escape. Visitors enjoy walking jogging or simply relaxing by the pond. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash.
