University of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville

Established in the 1960s the University of KwaZulu-Natal Westville campus has a rich history. It began as the University College for Indians. This was on Salisbury Island in Durban Bay. Student numbers were initially low due to the Congress Alliance’s policy. This policy shunned apartheid structures. The 1980s saw a shift. A strategy of education under protest emerged. This aimed to transform apartheid institutions into sites of struggle. Student numbers boomed. In 1971 the college gained university status. The newly named University of Durban-Westville moved to its current Westville location in 1972. It became a central hub for anti-apartheid activism. The university played a significant role in the fight against apartheid. It became autonomous in 1984 opening its doors to students of all races. This was a pivotal moment in South African history.
