Born in the late 1970s or early 1980s Kennedy Road represents the plight of South Africa’s urban poor. Lacking basic services like sanitation water and electricity its residents face daily challenges.
The story of Kennedy Road is one of continuous fight. Frustration over broken promises from local officials led to protests in 2005. A road blockade ensued. From this struggle the powerful shack dwellers’ movement Abahlali baseMjondolo AbM emerged. AbM championed the rights of its members advocating for better living conditions.
Tragedy struck Kennedy Road on July 16 2023. A devastating fire engulfed the settlement. Over 1100 homes were reduced to ashes. Thousands were left homeless. The loss was immense a profound blow to the already vulnerable community. One person died and others suffered injuries. A child remains missing.
In the aftermath aid arrived. Organizations like Gift of the Givers provided food and mattresses. The Human Settlements Department began assessing the damage. Yet the needs are vast and pressing. Shelter food and building materials are urgently required. The trauma suffered by residents especially children needs to be addressed.
