What began with just eighteen people blossomed into a cornerstone of faith. Today we stand before Westminster Community Presbyterian Church. It is a testament to community, resilience, and spiritual growth in Los Angeles.

Westminster Presbyterian Church’s story starts in 1904. A small group of African Americans with Presbyterian roots met at Central Presbyterian Church. They sought to establish their own church. They asked the Los Angeles Presbytery for guidance. On October 9, 1904, their dream began to materialize. By October 21, Westminster Presbyterian Church was officially recognized. It became the first African American Presbyterian church in California and west of the Mississippi River.

Initially, the congregation purchased land at West 35th Place and Denker Avenue in 1906. In 1908, they erected their first church building. That same year, Rev. Robert W. Holman became Westminster Presbyterian Church’s first pastor. His leadership saw the church grow significantly.

In 1912, Rev. Hampton B. Hawes took the helm. Rev. Hawes’ 45-year tenure shaped Westminster significantly. He earned a Doctor of Divinity degree from Occidental College. He also became Moderator of the Synod of Southern California. Despite challenges like two World Wars and the Great Depression, Westminster thrived under his guidance. The church grew spiritually and numerically.

As the “Westside” developed, ethnic demographics shifted. Recognizing these changes, Rev. Hawes led the congregation to acquire a new location. In 1948, Westminster secured its current home at 2230 West Jefferson Boulevard. The move in 1949 marked a new chapter. It expanded the church’s ministry into new territory.

The 1960s brought Rev. James E. Jones. He challenged Westminster to look beyond its walls. Quoting “The windows of Westminster look out upon all the avenues of the world.” The church embraced a multiethnic ministry. It championed public education and social services. Rev. Jones’ leadership during turbulent times solidified Westminster’s role as a beacon of hope.

Later pastors built on this foundation. Rev. Oliver L. Brown emphasized compassion for the less fortunate. He appointed Reverend David Morris as Associate Pastor, who had a great-grandfather who was also a pastor at Westminster.

In 1980, the Westminster Presbyterian Church building earned Historic-Cultural Monument status. This recognized its importance to Los Angeles history.

Westminster Presbyterian Church stands as a physical landmark and a symbol of spiritual and community strength. Its history reflects the changing face of Los Angeles. It embodies faith, perseverance, and commitment to serving others.

Today, Westminster Presbyterian Church continues its mission. It adapts to modern challenges. It remains a vital force for good in the Jefferson Park neighborhood. The church’s story is a testament to the power of faith. It shows the impact of a community united in service and love. The current pastor is Rev. Carlton A. Rhoden.
