Wow. Look at these fish. Aren’t they amazing?
These aren’t just any fish. These are the Fish sculptures at the Detroit Zoo. Created from recycled plastic they represent the five Great Lakes. This incredible art installation isn’t just pretty. It’s a powerful statement. It highlights the impact of plastic waste on our freshwater ecosystems.
Fifteen Detroit Public Schools students and Art Road volunteers made these stunning sculptures. Each fish is vibrant. Each is full of color. They’re designed to engage people. They make people think about sustainability. They make visitors consider the health of the Great Lakes.
The exhibit was originally part of GreenFest at the Detroit Zoo. It was displayed at the Ford Education Center. It ran from Earth Day through July 9 2017. The Zoo even featured the fish sculptures at their Sunset at the Zoo event. That was themed “Green is the New Black”.
The Detroit Zoo is dedicated to environmental sustainability. They’ve taken many steps to reduce their environmental impact. This includes things like using 100% renewable electricity and building an anaerobic digester. They even stopped selling bottled water. This impressive decision removed 60,000 plastic bottles from the waste stream annually.
