Gazing up at Luther-Kirche Asseln, imagine the echoes of construction from over a century ago. The year is 1906. The final stones are laid upon this magnificent neo-Gothic structure. Luther-Kirche Asseln stands proudly, a testament to the growth and faith of the Asseln community. The church we see today isn’t the first house of worship on this site. Records show a wooden chapel existed here as early as the mid-11th century. By the 13th century, a stone church graced this land. The late Romanesque tower, a landmark in Dortmund’s skyline, has a fascinating history. Originally built as a defensive structure with walls almost two meters thick, it served as a refuge during times of conflict. This sturdy tower was incorporated into the church during an 18th-century expansion, adding 20 meters to its height. The tower reached its current 67-meter stature in the 20th century during the Luther-Kirche Asseln reconstruction. Now, it houses five bells, each with a distinct voice. The architect Gustav Mucke faced a challenge. The burgeoning population, fueled by the local coal mines, demanded a larger church. Mucke’s initial design was rejected. The authorities insisted on preserving the historical elements of the site. Mucke masterfully integrated the late Romanesque tower and the early Gothic chapel into the new cross-shaped basilica design. The inauguration of Luther-Kirche Asseln in 1906 was a grand celebration. The construction cost over 200,000 marks, a significant sum at the time. The church’s interior is a feast for the eyes. Otto Berg’s Art Nouveau style paintings adorn the walls and ceilings, a unique feature in a Protestant church. The baptismal font and pulpit, carved from French Savonière limestone, add to the elegance. Three stained-glass windows illuminate the choir, depicting key religious events. Look closely at the north side of Luther-Kirche Asseln. You’ll find a poignant reminder of the impact of war. A lion roars in stone. Originally dedicated to the fallen soldiers of World War I, the monument’s inscription now includes those lost in World War II. Luther-Kirche Asseln is more than just a church. It is a living testament to the community’s resilience and spirit.
