Before you stands Ramlila Maidan a sprawling expanse in the heart of Delhi. This isn’t just any ground. It’s a stage for history a canvas for faith a testament to Delhi’s vibrant soul. Originally a large pond this land transformed in the early 1930s. It became the new home for the annual Ramlila performances. Before 1930 the Ramlila was held on the Yamuna River floodplains. Hindu soldiers of the Mughal army began staging the Ramlila there in the 1800s.

Ramlila Maidan’s location is significant. It sits between Old Delhi and New Delhi. The Turkman Gate a relic of the past stands nearby. The Maidan stretches between Aruna Asaf Ali Marg and Jawaharlal Nehru Road. It’s more than just a venue. It’s a living breathing part of Delhi’s narrative.

Picture this. Mahatma Gandhi Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel giants of India’s freedom struggle addressed massive rallies here. The air vibrated with their words. Their dreams ignited the hearts of countless people. The echoes of their voices still resonate across the Maidan.

Ramlila Maidan hosted Queen Elizabeth II in 1961. Prime Minister Nehru welcomed her to a public gathering. In 1963 after India’s defeat in the Indo-China war Lata Mangeshkar sang her patriotic song Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo. Nehru was present. Two years later Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri gave his iconic slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kisan at a public gathering.

The Maidan has witnessed protests too. In 1975 Jayaprakash Narayan led a massive rally against Indira Gandhi’s government. It was his last rally before arrest. After the Emergency anti-Congress leaders united to form the Janata Party. Their joint rally at Ramlila Maidan drew massive crowds. Even Muslims attended to hear the Shahi Imam Bukhari Senior.

More recently Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement made headlines here. Arvind Kejriwal took his oath as Delhi chief minister at Ramlila Maidan. The Maidan became an ICU facility during the Covid-19 pandemic. It housed hundreds of patients needing urgent care.

Ramlila Maidan isn’t just a historical site. It’s a living testament to Delhi’s enduring spirit. It’s a place where the past present and future collide. It’s a place where faith politics and community converge. Stand here and feel the pulse of a city a nation a history unfolding before your eyes. The stories whispered by the very ground you stand on are worth remembering.
