“Did someone say education was only for the privileged?” a voice boomed, echoing off the walls of the DUT: M.L. Sultan Campus. This very place, the DUT: M.L. Sultan Campus, stands as a testament to the unwavering spirit of a community that dared to dream of a brighter future. A future where education was a right, not a privilege. The story of DUT: M.L. Sultan Campus is a story of resilience, generosity, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. Its roots stretch back to the early 20th century when Indian laborers in KwaZulu-Natal faced the threat of repatriation if they lacked educational qualifications. The need for educational facilities became urgent. And so, humble classes began, fueled by the passion of volunteer teachers and the determination of leaders like Advocate Albert Christopher. In 1941, a turning point arrived. Hajee Malukmahomed Lappa Sultan, a man who had once walked 12 miles for an appointment, now pledged a substantial sum for a technical college. His vision, shared by many, was to empower young Indians with the skills they needed to thrive. The government matched his donation, and the DUT: M.L. Sultan Campus began to take shape. Construction began in 1954, and finally, in 1956, the magnificent three-story building on Centenary Road opened its doors. DUT: M.L. Sultan Campus blossomed. It evolved from a technical college into a College of Advanced Technical Education, then a Technikon, continually expanding its offerings to meet the needs of a changing society. Despite the constraints of apartheid, DUT: M.L. Sultan Campus remained a beacon of hope, providing quality education to those who had been systematically excluded. The spirit of ML Sultan himself, a man who understood both the hardships of life and the transformative power of education, seemed to permeate the very air. Though the institution officially merged with Technikon Natal in 2002 to become the Durban University of Technology, the ML Sultan Campus retains its unique identity, a reminder of its remarkable journey. It stands as a monument to a man’s generosity and a community’s thirst for knowledge. It’s a reminder that education can indeed pave the way to a brighter future, for everyone.
