South Hill Evangelical Church traces its roots back to 1865, to a humble gathering in Blackrock. This wasn’t a planned separation, but rather, a group of believers drawn together by a shared passion for the word of God. Initially, they met in homes, never intending to abandon their own churches. But as their bond deepened, they embraced their identity as an independent assembly. They first established themselves as Sydney Hall in 1876, choosing “Hall” over “Church” to distance themselves from traditional denominations. Imagine the scene: these early members, undeterred by darkness or the rumble of passing trams, would gather at Blackrock Park, their makeshift candlelit signs illuminating messages of faith. By the 1950s, a move was inevitable. A young member’s plea led them to Mount Merrion, specifically South Hill Park. In 1953, this very building, then still called Sydney Hall, opened its doors.
