Chugga chugga chugga. That’s the sound of Hedelands Veteranbane. Right here before you stands Denmark’s longest narrow-gauge veteran railway.

Hedelands Veteranbane isn’t just a train ride. It’s a journey through time. It’s a testament to volunteerism and passion. Founded in 1974 by the Industribaneklubben the railway initially boasted a mere few hundred meters of track. Two carriages and two locomotives were all they had. Today Hedelands Veteranbane stretches over 5 kilometers. It’s planned to extend to 7 kilometers reaching Tune.

Imagine the dedication. These volunteers built this incredible railway piece by piece. They scavenged materials from defunct sugar beet railroads on Lolland. The tracks themselves are 700 mm wide. They meticulously restored antique locomotives some dating back 60 to 100 years. These locomotives once served various industries. Now they carry passengers through picturesque landscapes.

The journey is a visual feast. Hedelands Veteranbane winds through former gravel pits. Now this area is a vibrant recreational space. You can spot wildlife and enjoy the scenery from various stations along the route. Rubjerg station is near the Flintebjerg ski slope. The view from there is simply breathtaking. You’ll see the Hedeland Skicenter and the impressive Teater Hedeland amphitheater. Even the unofficial staff break Duskely adds to its charm.

Each station has its story. Hedehusgård Station the starting point is a hub of activity. A ticket office a kiosk a workshop and even an exhibition hall are there. Sølnd station is near a fishing lake. You can choose to explore the 4 km long nature trail near Stenager station. Plantagen station has been known for its Christmas tree sales. But each stop offers different perspectives and views.

Hedelands Veteranbane is more than a railway. It’s a living museum. The museum near Hedehusgård Station showcases Denmark’s industrial railway heritage. You can see locomotives and carriages. Some are awaiting restoration. But all tell a tale of ingenuity and perseverance.

Around 20000 people ride this amazing train every year. They come to experience something unique. They come to appreciate history. They come to relish the sense of community. The volunteers who run Hedelands Veteranbane are passionate about their work. Their dedication has created a truly special place. A place where history comes alive. A place where the past meets the present in a glorious chugga chugga chugga.
