Established in 1944 this refuge began as a 250-acre donation. A Concord resident D Samuel Hoar gifted the land. He’d previously enhanced the marshlands for waterfowl hunting. Over time the US Fish and Wildlife Service expanded the refuge. They acquired more land to better protect the wetlands and wildlife.

Today Great Meadows boasts diverse habitats. Wetlands grasslands and forests thrive here. It’s a haven for migratory birds. Over 220 species have been recorded. You might spot mallards black ducks or even a rare Blanding’s turtle. This refuge holds one of the largest genetically distinct populations in the Northeast.

The refuge offers more than just birdwatching. Beavers white-tailed deer and various small mammals call this place home. Insects amphibians and reptiles add to the rich ecosystem. Even the less obvious creatures such as snakes and woodchucks play important roles.

Visitors enjoy walking and biking trails. An observation tower provides stunning views. The Concord unit near the Concord River is a favorite among birdwatchers. Ornithologists rate it among the state’s best inland birding areas. There is a small entrance fee for the Concord unit. However remember to wear blaze orange during hunting season.
