A splash of vibrant color disrupts the usual blues and greens. We are standing before the Red Lake. It is an area informally known as Houhai.

Technically, this area is called Shichahai. This translates to Ten Temple Lakes. Shichahai includes Qianhai, Houhai, and Xihai. These three lakes form a picturesque scene in Beijing. These lakes flow south into Beihai. The lakes then flow into the off-limits Zhongnanhai government compound. Together, these lakes create an expansive stretch of artificial waterways. These waterways extend about 4.5 km across the old city.

The story of Red Lake begins far back in time. It goes back to the Yuan Dynasty. During this period engineers built a canal system. This system was essential for transporting drinking water into the capital. Houhai’s location once marked the northern end of the Grand Canal. It became a royal retreat during the Qing Dynasty. Manchu nobles chose this area to construct their mansions. The most famous mansion belonged to Prince Gong.

Imagine Houhai today. It is a place loved by locals and visitors. People enjoy strolling along the willow-lined waterways. Many try their luck at fishing. Pedal boats offer a relaxing way to explore the water. In winter, the lake transforms into a giant ice-skating rink.

After sunset, the atmosphere shifts. Live music spills from bars along the shores of Qianhai and Houhai. Xihai provides a more peaceful setting. It offers idyllic scenery.

Interestingly, hardy locals take ice dips in the water during winter. Rickshaw drivers offer hutong tours along the shoreline. They provide a glimpse into the traditional alleyways.

When winter arrives, Qianhai freezes. It splits into two zones. One area offers ice-trikes. Chair sleds add fun for children. The other zone is for ice skaters. For about 80 yuan, anyone can join the fun on the ice.

These lakes connect Beijing’s past and present. They were crucial for water transport centuries ago. Now, they offer recreation and relaxation. From royal retreats to public spaces, the lakes continue to play a vital role in Beijing. So, the Red Lake is not just a body of water. It is a vibrant thread in Beijing’s rich tapestry.
