Originally called RTL Shop, Channel 21 has quite a story to tell. Here in Hanover, it’s more than just a television studio. Channel 21 is a testament to the ever-evolving world of media. Launching in 2001, Channel 21, then RTL Shop, was part of a grand plan by RTL Group. They wanted to move beyond traditional advertising revenue. They built a shiny new broadcast center here in Hanover in 2006. Imagine the hustle and bustle as this place became the heart of teleshopping. But the road wasn’t easy. Despite the move and restructuring, the channel struggled financially. Channel 21 faced a major turning point in 2008. RTL decided to sell. The channel landed in the hands of Aurelius AG, a Munich-based investment group. Their mission? Turn those losses into profits. A new chapter began in 2009. The name changed, first to “Channel 21 SHOP,” then finally to simply “Channel 21.” The channel even experimented with a spin-off, Channel 21 Express, for a few years. More changes were coming. Michael Oplesch, formerly of VIVA Germany, acquired the channel in 2010. Later that year, Thomas Haffa, the founder of EM.TV, took the reins. Even with these changes, Channel 21 teetered on the brink of bankruptcy, facing significant layoffs. The year 2012 brought another restructuring. Almost the entire staff was let go, leaving a skeleton crew of just 15 employees. They lost major suppliers, like cookware manufacturer Wollpfannen, who jumped ship to competitor QVC. Channel 21, however, persisted. They streamlined, focusing on their own “Maxx” brand. They embraced technological advancements, transitioning to a 16:9 format and eventually HD broadcasting. Channel 21 continues to broadcast. It stands as a survivor in the competitive world of television, a testament to its resilience.
