Before you stands the Stevens T Mason Monument a tribute to Michigan’s youngest governor. This bronze statue depicts Stevens T Mason confidently poised. He stands tall a testament to his remarkable life.

Stevens T Mason wasn’t just any governor. Appointed Secretary of the Territory of Michigan at only 19 he later became acting governor at 22. He successfully guided Michigan to statehood. At 24 he became its first elected governor. This made him the youngest governor in US history earning him the nickname “The Boy Governor.” A nickname he reportedly disliked.

The monument itself has a fascinating story. It’s crafted from melted-down cannons from Fort Michilimackinac. This adds a unique layer to the monument’s history. The sculptor Albert Weinert masterfully captured Mason’s youthful confidence. The architect H Van Buren Magonigle designed the pedestal. It features fasces Roman symbols for the power of magistrates. Sadly a semicircular platform and balustrade that once surrounded the statue have been demolished.

Initially buried in New York Mason’s remains were returned to Detroit in 1905. His sister Emily then 92 years old attended the moving ceremony. This event demonstrated the enduring respect for this historical figure. They were interred beneath this very monument.

In 2010 during Capitol Park renovations Mason’s remains were unearthed. This unusual event required the monument’s relocation. A ceremony was held on the 199th anniversary of his birth to reinter them. US Senator Carl Levin was among the attendees. Today the Stevens T Mason Monument stands as a lasting memorial to Michigan’s first governor. It symbolizes his contributions to the state’s history. It is a powerful reminder of his legacy. His legacy continues to inspire.
