A whirlwind of activity surrounds Berlin Hamburger und Lehrter Bahnhof. This is Berlin Hauptbahnhof today a vibrant hub. Yet its story whispers of a grand past.
Berlin Hamburger und Lehrter Bahnhof stands where history unfolded. It replaced the Lehrter Bahnhof a terminus opened in 1871. Lehrter Bahnhof linked Berlin to Lehrte near Hanover. This line became Germany’s most important east-west route. Its Neo-Renaissance style earned it the title palace among stations. Its glazed tile facade a cost-saving measure.
In 1882 Lehrter Stadtbahnhof opened nearby. It connected to the new Stadtbahn elevated railway. In 1884 Hamburger Bahnhof closed. Lehrter Bahnhof took over its Hamburg connections. The Flying Hamburger a famous diesel train sped between cities.
World War II severely damaged Lehrter Bahnhof. Limited service resumed then stopped in 1951. In 1957 it was demolished. Lehrter Stadtbahnhof survived as an S-Bahn stop. It was renovated in 1987.

Berlin Hauptbahnhof opened on May 28 2006. It is now Europe’s largest crossing station. The curved glass roof floods the station with light. Two towers house office space.
