He lived during the reign of Hung Due Vuong, the last of the Hung Kings. The Chem Communal House stands proudly in Thuy Phuong Ward, a testament to Ly Than’s enduring legacy. This communal house, over 2,000 years old, is one of the oldest in Vietnam. It was designated a special national relic site in 2018. Ly Than is celebrated for his diplomatic prowess and military acumen. Legend says he assisted An Duong Vuong in repelling Qin invaders from the north. He also served as an envoy to the Qin Dynasty, earning him the distinction of Vietnam’s first diplomat. Every year, on the 15th day of the fifth lunar month, the residents of Thuy Phuong Ward, along with those from neighboring areas, hold a vibrant festival to honor Ly Than. This festival, recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2016, showcases the deep respect and admiration held for this historical figure. The Chem Communal House is not just a place of worship, but a repository of invaluable historical artifacts. Inside, you’ll find three royal decrees from the Nguyen Dynasty, a thousand-year-old incense burner, and an intricate bronze gutter system. These relics offer a glimpse into Vietnam’s rich past.
