Established in 1718 by King Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia, the Feuersozietät stands as a testament to Berlin’s enduring spirit. It is the second oldest insurance company in Germany. Originally created to ensure the “permanent preservation of buildings,” the Feuersozietät started as a mandatory insurance policy for all property owners in Berlin. This was later extended to Brandenburg. Imagine the king, known as the “Soldier King,” decreeing that every building must be protected against the ravages of fire. This was not simply a matter of financial prudence. It was a matter of preserving the very fabric of the city. The Feuersozietät quickly became integral to Berlin’s growth and development. Early tests of the Feuersozietät’s resilience came with dramatic events. One was the explosion of the powder tower at Spandauer Tor in 1720. Another was a lightning strike on St. Peter’s Church in 1730, which destroyed not only the church but also 44 adjacent buildings. These incidents highlighted the crucial role of the Feuersozietät in providing financial security and enabling reconstruction. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the Feuersozietät evolved. It adapted to the changing needs of the city. It adopted various names reflecting its expanding scope, such as Neumärkische, Kurmärkische, and Land-Feuersozietät. Yet, despite these formal titles, the simple name “Feuersozietät” stuck with the people. Even the tumultuous period of hyperinflation in 1923 couldn’t extinguish the Feuersozietät’s flame. Although facing an uncovered sum of over 10 quadrillion (paper) marks, the currency reform reduced this astronomical figure to a manageable 10,416.42 rentenmarks. The company’s journey continued through the division of Germany. The Feuersozietät lost nearly half of its contracts due to the city’s partition. Yet, it persevered. It rebounded by securing over 150,000 new insurance contracts, demonstrating its adaptability. The company even established a life insurance branch, now known as the Öffentliche Lebensversicherung Berlin Brandenburg AG, in 1947. Today, while you stand before the Feuersozietät, remnants of its rich history are still visible. The enamel signs, depicting the Berlin Bear and the Brandenburg Eagle, serve as a reminder of the company’s origins. The iconic red “Flame-F” logo, adopted in the mid-1950s, represents the Feuersozietät’s continued commitment to protecting Berlin and Brandenburg. The Feuersozietät remains a vital part of the Berlin landscape. It has weathered storms of economic hardship, political upheaval, and war. It continues to provide security. It offers peace of mind to countless individuals, businesses, and communities.
