Imagine a waterway that once dictated the very lifeline of Beijing. This is the story of the Yuhe River Heritage Site.

The Yuhe River also known as the Jade River silently flows beneath our feet. It whispers tales of emperors of trade of cultural exchange.

Over 700 years ago the Yuan Dynasty recognized the need for efficient transport. Guo Shoujing a brilliant water conservancy expert was tasked to create this waterway. In 1293, the Yuhe River became a vital part of the Tonghui River. It was an integral section of the Grand Canal linking Beijing to the south.

Picture this: barges laden with grain and goods. They navigated this very route to supply the capital. This ancient river flowed through the Yuan Ming and Qing dynasties. It witnessed the rise and fall of empires.

But time and progress took their toll. Gradually the Yuhe River fell into disrepair. It became buried beneath layers of urbanization. The once vibrant waterway was reduced to a mere memory.

In 2002 Beijing recognized the historical importance of the Yuhe River. A restoration project was initiated. In 2007 work began to bring this ancient waterway back to life. By 2013 the first phase was completed. The Yuhe River once again flowed.

We are standing at a very special location. It marks a significant point along the 600-meter restored section. This section is about 4 meters wide. It runs between the Jingshan Subdistrict and the city’s central axis.

Notice the stone marker on the riverbank. It reads Tonghui River Yuhe River Heritage Site. This is a testament to the river’s enduring legacy.

This river has undergone multiple transformations. Archaeological excavations in the 2000s unearthed relics from the Yuan Ming and Qing dynasties. The dig uncovered ancient river embankments bridge foundations and even the Yuhe River Temple site. Among the artifacts discovered were brick fragments silver lock and porcelain shards.

The Yuhe River is not just a restored waterway. It represents a link to Beijing’s rich past. It is a reminder of the ingenuity and ambition. It sustained the city for centuries.

Today the Yuhe River Heritage Site is a testament to cultural preservation. It is a place where history comes alive. We have the opportunity to reflect on the past. Let us appreciate the enduring legacy of this ancient waterway.
