Observe closely. The Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele Secondo before us embodies Milan’s rich history. This statue isn’t just a sculpture. It is a symbol of Italian unification.

The Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele Secondo stands proudly in Piazza del Duomo. It honors Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of a unified Italy. Ercole Rosa sculpted this majestic work. Rosa won the commission in 1879. He chose Milan over Vercelli for its prestige.

Vittorio Emanuele II lived from 1820 to 1878. He became king after his father abdicated. Later, he skillfully reorganized and appointed Count Camillo di Cavour as Prime Minister.

The bronze equestrian statue shows Vittorio Emanuele II leading troops. He rides into the Battle of San Martino. Look at the red granite base. Bronze reliefs depict Piedmontese troops entering Milan. The front pedestal displays “June 1859”. This marks the King’s arrival in Milan. The other side shows “June 14 1896”. This is the monument’s inauguration date.

Notice the two marble lions beside the statue. One lion’s paw rests on a plate. “Rome” is engraved on the plate. The other lion’s paw rests on a plate engraved “Milan”.

Rosa completed all bronze castings by 1893. He chose Piazza del Duomo’s center as the location. Sadly, Rosa died that year. The Barzaghi brothers completed the project. Sculptor Ettore Ferrari oversaw their work.

Did you know Ercole Rosa became a stonemason at age 12? This was after his father’s death. In 2012, a foundation room was discovered under the Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele Secondo.

The statue is near the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. This shopping center adds to the area’s grandeur. The Galleria connects the Milan Cathedral and Teatro alla Scala. It symbolizes Italian unity. It is named after Vittorio Emanuele II.

Take a moment to appreciate the statue’s details. Capture its grandeur against Milan Cathedral. Visit in the morning or evening to avoid crowds.
