Red brick whispers tales of faith and resilience. That’s what you will notice immediately as you approach the Église Notre-Dame de Fives. This church stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Fives neighborhood in Lille. We are standing in front of Église Notre-Dame de Fives.

Église Notre-Dame de Fives is a beautiful church located on Place du Prieuré. It is a remarkable structure with a rich history. The church is a symbol of faith and architectural beauty.

In 1851 Abbé Léon Meesemaecker wanted a grand church. He wanted it to serve the growing population. He commissioned Charles Leroy to design it. Leroy was also the architect behind the Notre-Dame de la Treille cathedral. The first stone was laid in 1852. It was built on the site of a medieval priory. In 1856 Monseigneur Regnier consecrated the Église Notre-Dame de Fives.

Fives became part of Lille in 1858. By 1869 Église Notre-Dame de Fives was expanded. Two side aisles were added to accommodate the growing congregation. The church suffered damage during both World Wars. It underwent several restorations to repair the destruction. During World War I the Germans took the bells. They planned to melt them down. New bells were installed in 1923. In 2011 the bells were replaced again. This was part of a complete rehabilitation project. The project started in 2010 and finished in 2015.

The Église Notre-Dame de Fives has been recognized for its historical significance. In 2015 it was listed as a historical monument. This designation acknowledges its importance to the cultural heritage.

Charles Leroy designed the church in the Neo-Gothic style. Red brick defines the exterior. This architectural choice gives the church a distinctive look.

Inside, the church has beautiful stained glass windows. Ernest Haussaire, a local glass painter from Lille, created them. He worked on them between 1899 and 1904. The windows add color and light to the sacred space of Église Notre-Dame de Fives.

The chœur features four paintings by Bruno Chérier. These paintings include: “Les Âmes du Purgatoire” and “La Cour Céleste”. Also “Les vierges sages et les vierges folles” and “La Communion en viatique”. The first three paintings were displayed at the Paris Salon in 1873. The last one was shown at the Salon of 1878.

Église Notre-Dame de Fives also has a chœur organ. Previously, the organ was in the Saint-Sauveur church. A very old statuette of Notre-Dame de Fives is also in the church.

The complete restoration from 2010 to 2015 brought back the chœur’s original decorations. This careful work allows visitors to appreciate its artistic details.

As you leave Église Notre-Dame de Fives remember its story. It is a story of faith. It is a story of community. It is a story of art. The Église Notre-Dame de Fives stands as a symbol. It symbolizes hope and perseverance.
