Gleaming skyscrapers pierce the sky. This is Gangnam. Gangnam District is one of Seoul’s 25 districts. It translates to “South of the Han River”. Gangnam is the third largest district in Seoul. It covers 39.5 square kilometers.

Imagine rice paddies. Before the 1960s Gangnam was mostly that. It was a rural area. Thatched houses dotted the landscape. The Han River would often flood. People wore rain boots to get around Samseong Station.

Then came Seoul’s expansion. Gangnam transformed rapidly. The Gyeongbu Expressway connected Seoul and Busan. Apartment complexes sprung up along the Han River. Government agencies moved south. Prestigious schools followed. The “Gangnam Era” began.

Wealth concentrated here. As of 2024 apartment prices were double the rest of Seoul. Gangnam became synonymous with affluence and high standards of living. Comparisons to Beverly Hills arose.

But Gangnam offers more than commerce. Bongeunsa Temple is a serene escape dating back to the Silla period. Seonjeongneung houses royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. These national treasures offer glimpses into Korea’s past.

Gangnam is now divided into 12 neighborhoods. It has become a business hub. Teheran-ro is a center for IT trade and banking. K-pop thrives here. The Korean Wave washes over the world.

Several festivals occur in Gangnam. The International Peace Marathon happens in October. So does the Gangnam Fashion Festival. There is also a Sports Festival for residents in May.

Gangnam is a transportation hub. Several subway lines intersect here. This makes getting around easy.

“Gangnam Style” by Psy brought the district to global attention in 2012. While the music video was not filmed in Gangnam the song captured the area’s essence. It boosted international awareness.

Gangnam continues to evolve. It embraces new technology. It sets trends. It is a dynamic influential area.
