King Frederick William I, a man of strict discipline and a soft spot for soldiers, stood right here where we are now. He envisioned a place where children of fallen soldiers, those who sacrificed their lives for Prussia, would find solace and a future. Thus, the Großer Militärwaisenhaus was born. The Großer Militärwaisenhaus, right before your eyes, is not just a building. It is a testament to compassion, to history, and to the architectural grandeur of Potsdam. Founded in 1724, this grand institution initially housed only boys, offering them shelter, education, and vocational training. It quickly expanded to include girls, becoming a beacon of hope for hundreds of children. Imagine the hustle and bustle within these walls as children, aged 6 to 16, filled the classrooms and workshops. They learned reading, writing, arithmetic, and various trades, their young lives shaped by the principles of discipline and hard work. But the Großer Militärwaisenhaus is not just a relic of the past. It continues to evolve. Rebuilt in the late Baroque style between 1771 and 1778 by the renowned architect Carl Philipp Christian von Gontard, the building stands as a magnificent example of Prussian architectural prowess. Look up and notice the majestic tower that crowns the building. This tower, topped with a gilded statue of Caritas, the Roman goddess of charity, is a symbol of hope and care that has graced Potsdam’s skyline for centuries. Sadly, it was destroyed during World War II but meticulously reconstructed in 2004, returning the building to its former glory. Today, the Großer Militärwaisenhaus continues its legacy of nurturing young minds, now as a foundation supporting various youth projects.
