Founded in May 1906 Calvary Baptist Church initially resided in Southwest Philadelphia’s Elmwood neighborhood. Reverend George Lee Robinson served as its first pastor until his passing in 1918. The church thrived under various pastors. However the Elmwood Redevelopment Program forced a relocation in 1960. Reverend Emerson Talmadge led the congregation to its current location at 6122-24 Haverford Avenue in West Philadelphia. This move a significant event involved a motorcade from the old sanctuary to the new one in 1961. The new building was paid for in full a testament to the community’s dedication. Reverend Talmadge’s tenure saw significant spiritual and financial growth. He retired in 1991 passing away two years later. Several interim ministers followed. Dr Garth Gabriel Gittens became pastor in 2003. His leadership has continued the church’s growth. He and his wife First Lady Evangelist Dr Gillian Gittens are deeply involved. Their family includes two sons a daughter-in-law and five granddaughters. Calvary Baptist Church is more than just a building. It is a vibrant community.
