Once upon a time there was a quarry. This wasn’t just any quarry. This was the Villeray Quarry. It was a bustling place of industry. Men toiled extracting stone. The Villeray Quarry Company thrived. This was in the heart of what would become Parc Villeray.
Parc Villeray wasn’t always a haven of green space. It began its life as a working-class neighborhood. The land was owned by a significant figure Louis Rouer de Villeray. He was a member of the Sovereign Council of New France. He was also the comptroller of the Compagnie du Canada. His name lives on in the very name of the park.
195 years after his death a new municipality was formed. It was called Village Villeray. This encompassed 75 families. It was no longer part of the parish of Sault-au-Recollet. Ten years later it was annexed by Montreal. It was then united with the Saint-Denis district. Seventeen years after that Villeray became a distinct district. Its boundaries remained the same as the old village.
The Villeray Quarry Company was one of the first entities named after the village. It operated until 1934. The quarry closed then it was transformed. It was reborn as Parc Villeray. It remains one of the most popular parks in Montreal today.
