La Cañada begins its journey in La Lagunilla. This lagoon lies about 20 kilometers southeast of the city. It is nestled in the Sierra Chica mountains. Rainwater gathers here. When it rains heavily, the lagoon overflows. The water rushes towards Córdoba. It arrives with unexpected force.
For centuries, La Cañada posed a threat. Its floods caused immense damage. They claimed lives. In 1890, a flood killed about 200 people. The flood of 1939 swept away everything. Pavement disappeared. Buses were washed away. Furniture and animals vanished.
The city decided to tame La Cañada. The first attempt was in 1671. Andrés Jiménez de Lorca designed El Calicanto. This wall used stones and lime. Jesuits used similar techniques. You can see it in the Cripta Jesuítica.
However, El Calicanto was not enough. The floods continued. In 1944, a new project began. The goal was to control the waters. This project created the La Cañada we see today. It stretches for about three kilometers.
La Cañada now has stone walls and bridges. The bridges have a romantic style. They cross the waterway. The walls protect the city from floods. In 1948, tipa trees were planted. These trees line La Cañada. They create natural arches. Their yellow flowers bloom in November and December.
La Cañada has its legends. One is “La Pelada”. This ghost haunted people at night. She wandered near the waterway. People described her as a short figure. She wore a black cloak. Her face was hidden. If you got too close, she revealed a bald head.
Today, La Cañada is a source of pride. It was named one of Córdoba’s seven wonders. It is second only to the Iglesia de los Capuchinos. La Cañada is a reminder of the power of nature.
