Over 200 species of flowering plants grow here. More than 50 of these are medicinal plants. Also 21 types of trees grow here. The meadow is bordered by birches. A Benjes hedge protects the open side facing the heath. Wild herbs and flowers abound in the meadow. Protected orchids grow here. These include the broad-leaved marsh orchid. Sixty examples existed in 2013. The Naturdenkmal Egelpfuhle am Stier is known for its biodiversity.

The Egelpfuhle are shallow pools. They serve as breeding grounds for various bird species. They are spawning grounds for toads and frogs. These include the European fire-bellied toad. Also the common frog spawns here. Newts such as the great crested newt and smooth newt also spawn in the pools. Grass snakes also call this area home.

The area’s name comes from a former inn nearby. Its name was the Stier von Uri. No visible remains of the inn exist today. The \u00d6stlicher Egelpfuhl is a reminder of this history.

Berlin’s name has Slavic origins. The word “brl” means swamp or morass. The suffix “in” is typical for place names. Therefore Berlin means a place in the swamp. So the \u00d6stlicher Egelpfuhl ties into Berlin’s very identity.
