In the heart of Berlin, a somber monument stands, the Herbert-Baum-Denkmal. It’s a stark reminder of a courageous act of resistance against the Nazi regime. The Herbert-Baum-Denkmal commemorates Herbert Baum and his group. They were young, mostly Jewish, and deeply committed to fighting against the oppressive Nazi regime. Herbert Baum, an electrician by trade, became a central figure in the German resistance. He and his wife, Marianne, along with friends like Martin and Sala Kochmann, began organizing secret meetings. They discussed the Nazi threat, debated politics, and shared cultural experiences. These gatherings often took place in the Kochmanns’ drawing room and other members’ apartments, growing to include up to 100 youths.

The Herbert-Baum-Denkmal marks the location of a daring act of defiance. On May 18, 1942, the group attempted to set fire to a Nazi propaganda exhibition in the Lustgarten. This exhibition, titled “The Soviet Paradise,” was designed to fuel anti-communist sentiment. The attack, while not entirely successful, was a bold statement against the war and the Nazi regime’s terror. Tragically, the consequences were swift and brutal. Numerous group members were arrested, and many were sentenced to death. Herbert Baum himself was tortured and died in Moabit Prison. His wife, Marianne, was executed at Plötzensee Prison. The Gestapo rounded up 500 innocent Jews in reprisal, further highlighting the regime’s cruelty.

The Herbert-Baum-Denkmal stands as a testament to the courage of those who resisted. It also serves as a sobering reminder of the tragic consequences of their actions. The original memorial, erected in 1981 by the East Berlin magistrate, focused primarily on the group’s communist affiliations. Later additions, including glass panels inscribed with the names of the 34 executed members, broadened the narrative. The Herbert-Baum-Denkmal now stands as a layered symbol. It commemorates the resistance, the victims of Nazi reprisals, and the evolving understanding of this historical event. It’s a story of bravery, sacrifice, and the enduring fight against oppression, etched in stone and glass in the heart of Berlin. The Herbert-Baum-Denkmal is more than just a memorial; it’s a living testament to a dark chapter in history and a reminder of the importance of resistance in the face of tyranny.
