In the heart of Hamburg, Fuhlsbüttel awaits. Fuhlsbüttel is more than just an airport. It’s a place etched with layers of history, a silent witness to both soaring ambitions and dark chapters. Fuhlsbüttel’s story begins long before the roar of jet engines, in a time when airships ruled the skies. In 1912, the Luftschiffhafen Fuhlsbüttel, Germany’s first airship port, buzzed with activity. This was the headquarters of the Imperial Navy’s airship division. From here, airships embarked on reconnaissance missions over the North Sea and bombing raids against England during World War I. The very ground we stand on once vibrated with the thrum of these colossal airships. But Fuhlsbüttel’s story takes a somber turn with the rise of the Nazi regime. In 1933, a part of Fuhlsbüttel prison transformed into a concentration camp, chillingly nicknamed “KolaFu.” Initially under SA control, it became a holding place for political opponents, Jews, Romani, homosexuals, and others deemed undesirable. The Gestapo took over in 1936, turning KolaFu into a symbol of oppression and forced labor. Over 250 lives were extinguished within its walls. The prisoners who survived often found themselves on a grim path to other concentration camps like Buchenwald and Neuengamme. Even after the concentration camp closed, Fuhlsbüttel prison remained a tool of Nazi persecution. It housed those convicted of opposing the regime, often on flimsy charges of “treachery.” Many were later sent to concentration camps for “extermination through labor.” Today, the gatehouse of the Fuhlsbüttel prison serves as a memorial, a poignant reminder of the suffering endured within. Inside, a reconstructed solitary confinement cell and artifacts offer a glimpse into the harsh realities faced by the prisoners. A plaque bears the names of those who perished, ensuring their stories are never forgotten. From the heights of airship innovation to the depths of human cruelty, Fuhlsbüttel’s history is complex and compelling. It is a story of contrasting extremes, urging us to remember and learn from the past as we look towards the future. As you leave Fuhlsbüttel, carry with you not just the memory of an airport, but the echoes of the lives that have shaped this place, a testament to human resilience in the face of adversity.
