“Founded in an apartment.” That’s how the story of Gilead Baptist Church in Detroit begins. It is a humble origin for a church that would impact countless lives.
Gilead Baptist Church started in 1941. Dr. Robert Parr was the driving force. He had a vision and started the church in Detroit.
As the congregation grew, it needed more space. In 1956, Gilead Baptist Church moved to Allen Park. The church constructed a building that combined a school and a sanctuary. By 1960, the auditorium was complete. It could seat over 3,000 people.
But Gilead didn’t stay in Allen Park forever. Continued growth meant another move. In 1973, the church relocated to Taylor, Michigan.
Dr. J. Thomas Downs succeeded Dr. Parr as pastor. His bus ministry became nationally known. It was called “The Big Blue Bus.” Thousands of children learned about faith in Jesus Christ through this ministry. Dr. Downs also focused on supporting national pastors in their native countries.
In Taylor, Gilead focused on ministering to families. Baptist Park School was established in 1974. It included kindergarten through 12th grade. A daycare and preschool were also added.
In 1986, Dr. J. Thomas Downs’ health began to fail. His son, Rev. Thomas R. Downs, stepped into leadership. Pastor Tom had a deep love for people. He communicated God’s Word in an understandable way.
Baptist Park School closed in 2016. The Taylor location was put up for sale. In June 2023, God answered their prayers. The Taylor location was sold. Gilead is currently renovating a building in Brownstown. Until then, they meet at a temporary location which is Christ the King Lutheran Church in Southgate, MI.
Gilead Baptist Church is a diverse congregation. It focuses on God’s grace. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. Worship services, programs for all ages, small groups and Growth Track offer opportunities for spiritual growth.
